I went to see Cher on Aug 7th when I was in Las Vegas. As you read a few posts ago, I left my Cher tickets at home. Ticketmaster was kind enough to give me replacements so I could still see the show. Located at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, my seats were in the front orchestra section about 8 rows back to the right side of the theater. Pretty good seats if the girls in front of me would sit down. The show started about 20 mins late. People started getting restless and were clapping and making noise. Finally the music started and she came out riding in a flashy cage from the right side of the theater above our heads and into the center.
The cage made it’s way to the stage and lowered so she could get out. She was dressed in a gold flashy outfit with a matching head piece. Everything we expect from Cher. She sang her first song then talked to the audience. She said she thought about canceling the show because she had laryngitis but she decided to push on and make it through. She did sound a bit hoarse but still sang very well.
Though she hasn’t gotten good reviews, I enjoyed the show. She had lots of old video clips from the Sonny and Cher Show and she did one duet with Sonny via video tape. She had many costume changes, I didn’t count but there was quite a few. While she was changing was when we would see the videos or watch acrobatics. One of the sets was a wagon that she changed inside of to sing “Half Breed” dressed as an Indian. She went inside again and came out as a gypsy for.. you guessed it, “Gypsy’s Tramps and Thieves”.
I found some video and this is pretty much what I saw. It seems that her costumes are very different from the May shows so it’s not the same thing. I never saw her in a red wig the night I went. However she did wear the blond one while singing about Memphis.
It seems that every Las Vegas show now has some sort of Cirque type acrobats and this was no exception. Some of the acts had the bungy rope acrobatics to help pass the time. The staging was nice and not overly done and Cher was just Cher. She mostly walked across the stage and sang, she did a few dance moves but not many. Her Bob Mackey costumes did not disappoint fans, I think Cher and Las Vegas are a good match.
If you don’t like Cher you might not enjoy the show but for those who are fans, she was very enjoyable. I’d go see it again.
Note: I did not shoot any of the video here, I just found it on youtube and it’s pretty much what I saw.
