One of my favorite games of all time, the Ur-Quan Masters is a game definitely worth checking out since it’s available for free download.
It was originally released in 1992 under the name Star Control 2 but 10 years later, in 2002 some dedicated fans modded the game with things like an online melee, song remixes and a list of bug fixes.
The game features 2D space exploration where you mine resources, help different alien races and engage in fighting. The adventure starts with you; Captain Zelnick, returning home with your newly found Precuror space ship just to find out that earth has been enslaved by a race called the Ur-Quan.
After gaining the trust of the people on earth, you are send to save them by gaining allies to fight against the Ur-Quan. After that you are pushed right into the vastness of the galaxy with about 500 star systems to explore, all of which have an average of 5 planets it can be really confusing and overwhelming.
With a little patience, you will soon encounter a few different races who would help you progress through the game. There are about 20 different alien races to encounter and they are all very unique, original and fun.
The diversity between the races is probably the best feature of the game. There is a lot of humor filled dialog between all the races and it contains perfect voice overs. The aliens are diverse, from the cowardly Spathi to the aggressive Thraddash, or from the Slylandro gasbags to the fishy Orz. It’s all very interesting and always amusing to see all the different alien races and their cultures.
The dialog leads to some interesting non-linear side quests and sometimes, with a less friendly encounter, it will lead to combat. The combat could be a whole game on its own, there are about 20 different ships, all very unique, not just the firing but also the movement and behavior. In the campaign you have your giant precursos ship that you can upgrade for ALOT of firepower but you can also get other ships by doing quests or just buying them. If you don’t feel like doing the campaign you can always go to ‘super melee’ to fight against npc’s, friends or against people online.
The game takes about 20 to 30 hours to complete (which is long, especially for a free game). The good story, giant play world, perfect voice overs and great combat makes this game an absolute must have! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
