I like to watch off beat movies and I found one that is really unusual. It came out in 2006 and has some big name actors but it wasn’t a box office smash. It’s the story of Augusten Burroughs and stars Annette Bening as the mentally unstable mother and Alex Baldwn as his alcoholic father. It’s a true story written by Mr. Burroughs and based on his journal as he was growing up.
After his parents divorce, his crazy mother transfers legal guardianship of 14 yr old Augusten over to her really eccentric therapist and his even stranger family. How strange? His house was pink and full of junk, not something you’d expect from a shrink. He has two daughters, one claims to talk to cats in her dreams and the other becomes Augusten’s friend. While its sad knowing that the events were true, it also had some very humorous moments. It’s worth a view a least once.
Funny thing about finding this movie, I bought my sister the book a few years back because of the title. She stabbed herself with scissors twice when we were kids, in the same spot on her leg so the book was a joke gift. I never read it when I gave it to her but now I wish I had. It came full circle when I found the movie. Maybe I should send her the move too.
