Ever since the last update, my Left 4 Dead game is crashing. The game suddenly freezes and the sound starts looping and the screen turns black. In reading the steam forum, it seems that a lot of people are having the same issue. No one knows for sure what the problem is and how to fix it and no word from Valve yet on what to do. I have an NVIDIA 8800 GTS with Windows Vista 32 and it’s worked fine with this game before as well as other games. In taking off the side panel, the card seems really hot. This happens after playing for about 30 mins. There is an error message about the video card recovering from a fatal crash.
Last night I was within minutes of obtaining a gold medal when my video card crapped out. Talk about being disappointed. The other members of my team made the gold medal and I was left looking at a black screen and screaming at my computer. If I find a fix for this, I’ll post it. If you know of a fix, please share with me. For now, here is a thread where other people have reported their issues. Crash!

I have the same exact NVIDIA 8800GTS 512MB card. You’ll need to rig an extra cooling fan over the card (either 120mm or 90mm). It also helps keep it cool with other games. I’ll take a picture of what I did when I get home. I had to do this due to the design of my motherboard – the southbridge chip’s cooling fan was blowing the hot air directly onto my videocard. The fan I installed blows the hot air away and keeps the temps cool.
