I got tour GEARBOX Software on Monday!! They never give tours so how did this happen? Last fall Gearbox Software had community day and during this time they had an auction for charity. One of the items up for auction was a tour of the company in Plano, Texas. My mom lives in Richardson so I could combine a visit with her plus a visit to the studio so I bid on it and won!! A few months later, here I am in Texas and I got to meet all the wonderful people at Gearbox. Gearbox makes one of my favorite games Borderlands and Borderlands 2.
They had a car pick me up at my mom’s house and take me to the office building. I arrived wearing my “Butt Stallion” t-shirt and carrying another Borderlands shirt I got at a PAX event to be signed. In the lobby I was greeted and given an NDA to sign as I got to see and hear about many projects currently being worked on but I’m not allowed to talk about them. Exciting stuff!! It turns out I rode up in the elevator with the Executive VP, Brian Martel. They said he is responsible for the art style of the game. Our paths crossed several times that day so I asked for a photo. Super nice guy.
Also on my tour were two recent employees who hadn’t seen the office layout so it was nice to not be by myself. By the way CEO Randy Pitchford‘s office is amazing, he has quite the game collection and one super awesome computer. I had a nice lunch in one of the meeting rooms with the owners Randy, Brian, Steve and Kristy (Randy’s wife). It was so nice to just sit and talk like we were old friends. My biggest regret was not getting a photo of all of us at lunch. I got the second part of the tour in the afternoon and a chance to play the latest HeadHunter DLC Mad Moxxi and the Wedding Day Massacre.
Before I left, they handed me lots of parting gifts including two books, t-shirts, a hoodie, posters and key chain. They also gave me some key codes. I felt like a guest on the Oprah giveaway show. I left the shirt I brought along with an art book to be signed by the owners and they will be mailed to me later. We parted ways and agreed to meet again at PAX East.
I want to say THANK YOU to Kristy Pitchford who arranged my whole day, to Randy for the wonderful smile that’s always on his face, to Brian for escorting me up the elevator, to the people at Gearbox for being so nice and sharing your space with me for the day and for all the wonderful gifts that keep coming. The day far exceeded any of my expectations and I will always be one of your biggest fans!!
